Aftercare for teeth whitening: What can I eat after my treatment?

Before whitening your teeth there isn’t a whole lot you have to worry about. If your teeth are feeling good just give them a quick brush before hand, then get started. If you feel any sharp pain or sensations in your teeth you should see a dentist before going ahead with any DIY teeth whitening, just to be on the safe side before whitening.

There are heaps of teeth whitening options out there and available to you including:

  • Teeth Whitening Trays
  • Teeth Whitening Gels
  • LED Lights
  • Activated Charcoal Powder
  • Dentist Take-Home Kits
  • Whitening Pens

All of these works in slightly different ways, but one thing is for sure. Right after using any of these methods, your teeth are much more susceptible to staining. Diet plays a huge part in whether or not these methods are effective or not so you should always be wary about the type of food you eat after a whitening session. Whitening your teeth before bed is always the best option for any option you choose.

Red Wine

If you choose to brush your teeth directly after whitening go ahead. But try to stay away from the coloured options like red or blue toothpaste, just stick to plain old white.

Of course, I shouldn’t even have to say this, but smoking cigarettes is obviously one of the worst things not only for your health, but your teeth as well. This habit will always affect the colour of your teeth which will result in you needing more whitening treatments in the future. If you really need to smoke, wait at least 24 hours after whitening.

As for food and drinks, red wine, tea and coffee are the biggest culprits. As well as any coloured fruit juice. Soy sauce, tomato sauce, curry, balsamic vinegar, sugary drinks and almost every fruit will have an impact on the colour of your teeth. I’m not saying to cut these things out of your diet, that would be almost impossible. Just try to avoid them directly after whitening your teeth. The list is extensive I know, and there is tons more that could be on there. But let common sense prevail, if it looks like it could stain your teeth, it probably can.

You want to work on whitening your teeth right? So let's stick to a ‘whiter’ diet. You should try to consume foods and drinks that look white or colourless. It may sound like not much fun but this isn’t forever, just for the hours after whitening treatment.

If you do your whitening treatment right before bed then the first meal you’ll consume is breakfast. So try looking out for breakfast cereals that aren’t rich with sugar and food colouring like fruit loops or frosted flakes. Weet-Bix or porridge is a healthier, more ‘teeth friendly’ alternative.
